Tom Petty’s longtime Malibu home lists for $19M

Real Estate

A Mediterranean-style estate in Malibu that long belonged to the late Tom Petty is listing for $19 million.

Petty — who passed away in 2017 at the age of 66 — and his widow, Dana York, bought it in 1998 and hosted many a Thanksgiving, Christmas and Heartbreakers hangout there, according to Mansion Global, which first reported that the property was set to hit the market.

Unlike many celebrity abodes in Malibu, the 2.6-acre property isn’t located next to the beach but in the heart of the California city, which is located just west of Los Angeles.

“I knew them when they bought it, and [Petty] said ‘I don’t want to fall into the ocean 25 years from now,’” Coldwell Banker Realty agent Pamela Van Ierland, who holds the listing, told Mansion Global. “Dana and Tommy didn’t care about the views, they wanted tranquility.”

Van Ierland was a friend of the couple’s and spent time at the address, with Petty once showing her daughter how to play his hit “Free Falling” on the harmonica there. Petty “loved that house, it was a sanctuary,” she noted, adding that it “was always full of music and laughter and love.”

Today, the 10,000-square-foot main house offers a great room with a fireplace and a hand-carved skylight, a wood-paneled library, a music room, a butler’s pantry-equipped kitchen, multiple Spanish-tiled bathrooms and dark wood flooring throughout, Mansion Global reported.

The primary suite offers a sprawling closet — “I’ve never seen a man with so many Western flannel jammies in my life,” Van Ierland told the outlet — and, through French doors, access to an enclosed courtyard.

Elsewhere on the property are two guesthouses, one of which Petty converted into a studio space with recording and rehearsal rooms.

The landscaped grounds feature numerous fountains, lawns, ponds, waterfalls and a pool.
