Hoopsters on the court will be reaching new heights.
Brooklyn’s tallest skyscraper is set to open a basketball court on the 66th floor next year, which ranks among the highest of any such facilities in the word, according to a report.
The new Brooklyn Tower, a luxurious, 93-story residential building that dominates the Downtown Brooklyn skyline at over 1,000-feet tall, revealed the first look at its upcoming Sky Park that will include two basketball courts, a dog run and children’s playground, CNN reported.
The building’s developer, JDS Development, told the outlet that at an astounding 629 feet, it will be the highest place to hoop in the western hemisphere.
Sky Park will be built on a floor of the skyscraper that has been intentionally left open to the wind to reduce building sway, the architecture firm behind the project said.
“These wind floors are performative,” Gregg Pasquarelli, founding principal at SHoP, told CNN. “We took advantage (of the space).”
Naked to the elements, the covered floor will be most utilized during the warmer months as any basketball court, Pasquarelli said.
Pasquarelli and the SHoP team took inspiration from one of their previous designs —- the Brooklyn Nets’ home arena, Barclays Center, on Atlantic Avenue, which opened in 2012 and is just blocks away from the Brooklyn Tower.
“We definitely took cues from how we designed the Barclays Center,” Pasquarelli told CNN, noting the gray, black and white color scheme and floor design.
The tower’s design, with its dark metallic structure with a neo-art deco crown, has been criticized for looking like a villain’s lair, but was meant to reflect the the landmarked Dime Savings Bank attached to it.
Pasquarelli told NY1 that SHoP incorporated black steel, copper and huge windows to reflect the borough itself, dubbing it “the Empire State Building of Brooklyn.”
JDS Development Group purchased the decommissioned bank in 2016 for $95 million with plans to redevelop it into a retail space attached to the massive $750 million tower, according to CNN.
SHoP Architects is also the team behind the world’s skinniest skyscraper, at 111 W. 57th St. on Billionaires’ Row.
Construction on the tower began in 2018 and its first residents began moving in earlier this year.
Rentals in the building start at $3,591 a month for a studio and $4,350 a month for a one-bedroom, with two months’ free rent reflected in the price. Prices for condos range from $875,000 for a studio to $8 million for a four-bedroom.
The tower’s residences offer stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and, with no other skyscrapers nearby, the Atlantic Ocean.
