Chris Burch adds another luxury hotel to his portfolio

Real Estate

Chris Burch is on something of a spending spree, it seems.

We reported at the end of June that the venture capitalist and fashion trailblazer had dropped $29 million on a “vacation home” in the Hamptons.

Now we’re told that Burch has bought a second luxury hotel.

Burch already owns the breathtaking resort Nihi Sumba on a private island near Bali, Indonesia, which is regularly named as one of the best hotels in the world by the luxury travel press.

We hear that he’s now snapped up the 3,500-acre Santo Thomas ranch in Costa Rica and will soon be opening it as the Nihi Santo Thomas.

We’re told the property is the “ultimate paradise playground” and boasts “waterfalls, safari, horses, polo, macaws, howler monkeys and more.”

He’s working on the project with hotelier James McBride and acclaimed architect Ronald Zurcher, we’re told. Insiders say they’re hoping to open in time for Christmas 2023.

Travel + Leisure named the Nihi Sumba the best hotel in the world in 2017, awarding it 99.12 out of possible 100 points for its facilities, location, service, food, and overall value.

The magazine wrote, “It’s difficult to find a destination that feels completely secluded while still offering great amenities, but — according to Travel + Leisure’s readers — has struck just the right balance. And that has earned it the distinction of being.”

“With just 33 villas on 560 acres,” it added, “guests can enjoy complete privacy while also partaking in any and all beachfront activities the hotel offers like surfing, snorkeling, spearfishing, yoga, horseback riding, and hiking.”

Burch unloaded a sprawling Southampton estate in September for a reported $18 million. Earlier in 2020, he bought a seven-bedroom Miami Beach mansion built in 1936 for $14.2 million earlier.
